Redefining Hacking is a thorough break-down of red-teaming, the tools, techniques and procedures hackers use in the virtual and physical world. Think of it as a shopping list of exploits which a Cyber security consultant should be aware of, with the contents distilled down so anyone could understand it. If you are interested in learning about hacking then don’t be put off by the thought of this being too technical for you, this book will appeal to all levels, the three authors have a plethora of experience, and their anecdotes set the stage for the exploits they introduce in the book. A point to note is there were technical reviewers too, one of these reviewers, Petar Radanliev, was the lead penetration tester for the MOD for five years. The book is set out like an exercise book, with each chapter having objectives, questions and even links to GitHub resources, these all help digest the unique language of Cyber. The contents are broken down into eleven sections taking you through the fundamentals of how Penetration testing has evolved and an introduction to Red Teaming such as the MITRE ATT&CK Framework. It furthers this to talk about the common infrastructure, methodology and tools, social engineering, advanced exploits and active directory/Linus environments. Then finally it goes into the part of the book we mainly came here for, the future beyond Artificial intelligence (AI), Bug bounty, effective reconnaissance, hacking modern web applications and leveraging the Power of AI.
So what? You might be thinking that with the advancement of technology a book of this nature may not remain relevant for long, however far too often we see Cyber-attacks exploiting these fundamental vulnerabilities and AI will present a further attack vector to exploit. For those wanting a career in Cyber Security, specifically penetration testing then this would be a great starting point and above all it will Redefine your bookshelf with its dominating wedge of an exercise book which would not go unnoticed with a title such as Redefining Hacking.
