From August 2023 Lt Gen Paul Griffiths was the Assistant Chief of the General Staff where he played a leading role in guiding the Army through the Strategic Defence Review. In June 2025 he was appointed as the Master of Signals and in September 2025, he promoted to Lieutenant General, assuming the role of Commander Standing Joint Command. He as wasted no time in providing his vision for the Royal Corps of Signals.
“Secure and Connect the Integrated Force to Fight and Win in Every Domain.”
Today’s wars have no home and away. The fight is not just in the air, under and above water, and on the land but also on networks, in data lakes, in the spectrum and in space. The rapid proliferation of dual use technology and the unprecedented use of data and artificial intelligence to increase lethality reinforces the pivotal role of our Corps.
Defence cannot win without a resilient network of networks, connecting any sensor with any effector across any domain. From F35 to Ajax to one-way effectors to frigates, the Digital Targeting Web will be at the core of the integrated force – our vital ground. It will be bristling with ever changing applications, fuelled by the flow of data and powered by artificial intelligence. The Corps’ part in dominating the cyber and electromagnetic contest is obvious and fundamental.
Our Corps operates across all parts of Defence and the integrated force. Our officers and soldiers, and the unique skills they offer, are already embedded across our nation’s security apparatus and alongside our global allies and partners. This unique and powerful human network is just as important as those we create from silicon, fibre, electrical power, software and data.
The crucial difference between us and those we will fight is the brilliance of our people. We must all be ‘technical first, soldier always’ to be at the centre of the critical enterprise that delivers an always-connected, secure and integrated network of networks; that links sensors, deciders and effectors; and where we use the electromagnetic spectrum to find and understand the adversary. No matter who and where you are, signaller or general, regular, reserve, veteran or associate, I want you to own this opportunity.
As the Master of Signals, I will do whatever I can to help our Corps deliver this vision. But the real power lies with every member of our Corps, and I ask you to think, support and enable us to do better each and every day. We must step up now, with confidence and clarity, to secure and connect the integrated force to fight and win in every domain.
