AI Accelerated Software Development is an emerging approach where practitioners collaborate iteratively with AI coding assistants to translate intent into working software at materially greater speed than traditional methods. The opportunity and the risks are relevant across Defence, but this article focuses on utility for The British Army. The strategic prize is much improved time to capability, better translation of operational need into useful tools, and reduced friction across training, readiness, and operations.

The risk is equally strategic. Without coherent governance, AI accelerated delivery will drive uncontrolled proliferation of tools, security vulnerabilities, unclear data handling, and fragile software that becomes relied upon without sustainment. This article sets out the opportunity, proposes a governance framework anchored in MOD’s policy of Secure by Design, and positions the Royal Corps of Signals, supported by the Specialist Group Information Services, as a credible custodian for structured adoption at pace.
